Dogs and Cats to South Africa

Collection of your pet is available from your home or breeders address anywhere in England, Scotland or Wales, or you may deliver to our premises, or be met at Heathrow airport by one of our representatives

Owners must obtain an Import Permit from the Director of Veterinary Services, Private Bag X138, Pretoria Street, Pretoria, South Africa. There is a charge in South African Rand which must accompany each application. We are able to obtain this permit on your behalf via our agents and charge your account accordingly if required.

Pet dogs and cats must be microchipped and have the microchip number recorded on all veterinary certificates. Microchipping must be undertaken before the required vaccinations are given to enable the Official Veterinarian (OV) or Local Veterinary Inspector (LVI) Veterinary Surgeon of DEFRA to identify the animal when completing any paperwork.

All dogs and cats entering South Africa should be vaccinated against rabies at least 30 days and not more than 12 months prior to shipment. If this is not done in the UK prior to travel, then it will be required on arrival in South Africa.

Pre-shipment veterinary work by our own Veterinary Surgeons is also available including blood tests, parasite treatments and the issue of the DEFRA Export Health Certification. If you prefer to use your usual Veterinary Surgery, we will guide both you and your Vet through each step as necessary to ensure total compliance with the current regulations.

Dogs must have a set of blood tests within 30 days of shipment and also have a series of medication for heartworm which is given following the blood test. The first treatment must be given in the U.K. prior to shipment, at the time of the blood test and then a further 6 months must be administered in South Africa after arrival. The owner of the dog must sign a declaration stating they are in receipt of this course of treatment and will administer it as directed by their Veterinary Surgeon. We will advise you and your Vet on the current products that are available and approved for use by the South African Government and supply the declaration for you to sign.

Fetchapet have agents in Johannesburg, Port Elizabeth, Durban and Cape Town who will, if required, attend to the import permit application and collect dogs and cats on arrival at the airport, clear through customs and deliver to the owner's house or meet at the airport to hand over the pet.

IATA compliant pet air travel containers are manufactured in our own workshops and each kennel is tailor made to suit your pet's measurements which ensures maximum safety and comfort during the journey.

We offer clear guidance and as much support as needed for our clients on what tests and treatments must be done and when to do it in order to prepare pets for shipment.

A DEFRA Export Health Certificate is required for dogs and cats which must be issued by an OV (Official Veterinarian) or L.V.I (Local Veterinary Inspector) of DEFRA and signed not more than 10 days prior to shipment. Most surgeries have at least one OV working in the practice. We can help with applying for this on your behalf.
