Pet Travel Austria – Pet Transport to Austria from UK
Flying your dog or cat to Austria? Understanding the documentation requirements is essential.
Austria follows EU pet travel rules but UK Pet Passports are no longer valid for entry. You’ll need an Animal Health Certificate instead. We’re Fetchapet and we’ve been handling European pet transport for over 30 years. Whether you’re heading to Vienna, Salzburg, Innsbruck or elsewhere in Austria, we’ll sort the paperwork and flights.
UK To Austria Pet Requirements
- Animal Health Certificate (AHC)
UK Pet Passports are no longer accepted for Austria. You need an AHC issued by a UK vet within 10 days before travel. The certificate is valid for four months and covers your trip to Austria, onward EU travel and return to the UK. - Microchip
Your pet needs an ISO compliant microchip implanted before or at the same time as their rabies vaccination. The microchip number links all documentation together. - Rabies vaccination
Must be given at least 21 days before entering Austria. Vaccines given more recently won’t be accepted. - Minimum age
Your pet must be at least 16 weeks old to travel (allows time for rabies vaccination at 12 weeks plus the mandatory 21 day waiting period). - Pet limit
Maximum of 5 pets per person. Beyond this, commercial import rules apply. - No quarantine
When all documentation is correct, your pet clears customs without quarantine.

Flying Your Pet To Austria
Austrian Airlines and other carriers flying from the UK to Austria require pets to travel as cargo, not in cabin. This applies regardless of your pet’s size.
Your pet travels in a crate built specifically for them in our workshops. IATA compliant sizing ensures your dog or cat can stand, turn around and lie down comfortably.
We fly pets to Vienna and can arrange connections to other Austrian cities including Salzburg, Innsbruck and Graz depending on your final destination.
Onward Travel Within The EU
Your Animal Health Certificate remains valid for four months from issue. This means you can travel onward to other EU countries after arriving in Austria using the same certificate.
If you’re planning to visit Finland, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Norway or Malta after Austria, your pet will need tapeworm treatment given between 24 hours and 5 days before entering those specific countries. Austria itself doesn’t require tapeworm treatment.
Living In Austria With Pets
Austria is generally pet friendly with plenty of outdoor spaces, mountain trails and dog-welcoming establishments.
Vienna offers numerous parks and cafes with outdoor seating where dogs are welcome. The city has an extensive public transport network and dogs are allowed on buses, trams and trains.
Mountain regions like Tyrol and Salzburg provide excellent hiking opportunities with your dog. Lakes and forests across Austria offer plenty of exercise options.
If you’re relocating permanently rather than visiting, be aware that dogs must be registered with local authorities by three months of age. All dogs in Austria require microchipping and most municipalities charge dog tax. These are resident requirements rather than import rules.
