Pet Travel Hungary | Flying Your Dog or Cat to Hungary from the UK

If you’ve looked into moving a pet to somewhere like Germany or Denmark first, Hungary will feel noticeably lighter. There’s no tapeworm treatment for dogs to schedule, and no breed to check against a banned list. What’s left is the same three steps every EU move needs, in the right order.

Fetchapet guide you through the paperwork and keep the rabies timing on track, and if your own vet can’t issue the Animal Health Certificate, our vets at Ark Veterinary Centre can take care of that for you. We’ll collect from anywhere in England, Scotland or Wales, or you can drop off with us or meet us at Heathrow.

The Three Things Hungary Actually Asks For

Exporting your pet to Hungary

Start with the microchip. It has to be ISO 11784 or 11785 compliant, and it needs to go in before the rabies vaccination, or on the same day at the latest. Your pet also needs to be at least 12 weeks old before that rabies jab happens.

The rabies vaccination itself is the one with a real waiting period attached. Once it’s given, you count 21 full days before you can travel, not before. It’s valid for 12 months after that, so there’s some flexibility if your dates move around.

Last is the Animal Health Certificate, issued by an Official Veterinarian no earlier than 10 days before you arrive in Hungary. It covers you for entry within that window, then stays valid for 6 months if you’re carrying on elsewhere in the EU or heading back to Great Britain.

That’s the full list. No tapeworm treatment, which dogs travelling to Finland, Ireland, Malta, Norway or Northern Ireland still need, and no breed restrictions of any kind.

Sorting The Paperwork And What It Costs

Not every vet holds Official Veterinarian status, so it’s worth checking with your regular practice early rather than assuming they can sign off the certificate. If they can’t, our own vets at Ark Veterinary Centre in Colchester handle EU export certificates regularly and can take you through it.

If your pet has an ongoing health condition, mention it when you first get in touch, since it needs noting on the certificate rather than something that usually stops travel.

Cost comes down mostly to your pet’s size, since that decides the crate, wooden or vari kennel, and Animal Health Certificate fees vary a little between practices on top of that. Get a free, no obligation quote and we’ll give you an exact figure once we know your pet’s size and travel dates.

FAQs For Pets Traveling Hungary

Does my dog need tapeworm treatment for Hungary?

No. Tapeworm treatment isn’t required to enter Hungary. It only applies to dogs travelling to Finland, Ireland, Malta, Norway or Northern Ireland.

Are there breed restrictions for Hungary?

No. Hungary doesn’t publish a list of banned or restricted breeds for pet import.

Will my pet be quarantined entering Hungary?

No, provided the microchip, rabies vaccination and Animal Health Certificate are all in order. There’s no quarantine under the standard EU pet travel scheme.

Do I still need an EU pet passport for Hungary?

No. Since the EU rule change on 22 April 2026, UK residents can no longer travel on an EU pet passport. You need an Animal Health Certificate instead, which we arrange for you.

Can Fetchapet’s vets issue the certificate?

Yes. Our vets at Ark Veterinary Centre issue Animal Health Certificates for EU travel regularly and can advise on anything that might affect your pet’s journey.
