When arranging a pet export to SA, pet owners must obtain an Import Permit from the Director of Veterinary Services, Private Bag X138, Pretoria Street, Pretoria, South Africa. There is a charge in South African Rand which must accompany each application. We are able to obtain this permit on your behalf via our agents and charge your account accordingly if required.
Sending Dogs and Cats from the UK to South Africa
Pet dogs and cats must be microchipped and have the microchip number recorded on all veterinary certificates. Microchipping must be undertaken before the required vaccinations are given to enable the Official Veterinarian (OV) or Local Veterinary Inspector (LVI) Veterinary Surgeon of DEFRA to identify the animal when completing any paperwork.
Before dogs and cats are sent from the UK to South Africa, they need to be vaccinated against rabies at least 30 days and not more than 12 months prior to shipment. If this is not done in the UK prior to travel, then it will be required on arrival in South Africa.
Pre-shipment veterinary work can also be carried out by our own Veterinary Surgeons, including blood tests, parasite treatments and the issue of the DEFRA Export Health Certification. If you prefer to use your usual Veterinary Surgery, we will guide both you and your Vet through each step as necessary to ensure total compliance with the current regulations.
Dogs being sent from the UK to South Africa must have a set of blood tests within 30 days of shipment and have a series of medication for heartworm, which is given following the blood test. The first treatment must be given in the UK prior to shipment, at the time of the blood test and then a further 6 months must be administered in South Africa after arrival. The owner of the dog must sign a declaration stating they are in receipt of this course of treatment and will administer it as directed by their Veterinary Surgeon. We will advise you and your Vet on the current products that are available and approved for use by the South African Government and supply the declaration for you to sign.
Fetchapet have pet export agents in Johannesburg, Port Elizabeth, Durban and Cape Town who will, if required, attend to the import permit application and collect dogs and cats on arrival at the airport, clear through customs and deliver to the owner’s house or meet at the airport to hand over the pet.
Comfortable and secure, our IATA compliant pet air travel containers are manufactured in our own workshops. Every kennel is fully tailored to your own pet’s measurements.
We offer clear guidance and as much support as needed for our clients on what tests and treatments must be done when sending a cat or a dog to South Africa, and when to do it in order to prepare pets for shipment.
A DEFRA Export Health Certificate is required for dogs and cats which must be issued by an OV (Official Veterinarian) or L.V.I (Local Veterinary Inspector) of DEFRA and signed not more than 10 days prior to shipment. Most surgeries have at least one OV working in the practice. We can help apply for this on your behalf.
