Flying your dog or cat to Bulgaria? We’ll walk you through what you need.

Bulgaria sits in the European Union, which means it follows EU pet entry rules. However, since the UK left the EU, the paperwork changed. More recently in April 2026, the EU tightened the rules again, which affects anyone traveling from the UK with pets. We’re Fetchapet and we’ve been handling European pet transport for over 30 years. Whether you’re heading to Sofia, Varna, Plovdiv or the Black Sea coast, we’ll sort the paperwork and flights.

What Bulgaria Requires For Your Pet

The biggest change is that UK Pet Passports don’t work anymore for entering Bulgaria or any EU country. Instead, you need something called an Animal Health Certificate, which is essentially a health document issued specifically for each trip.

To get this certificate, your pet needs to meet several requirements. First, they must be microchipped with an ISO 11784/11785 compliant chip. This microchip has to go in before or at the same time as the rabies vaccination because the microchip number ties all the paperwork together.

Once microchipped, your pet needs their rabies vaccination. They must be at least 12 weeks old when they get the jab, and then you need to wait at least 21 days before you can travel to Bulgaria. If your pet already has their rabies vaccination, check whether they need a booster before traveling.

With the microchip and rabies vaccination sorted, you can then get the Animal Health Certificate from an Official Veterinarian. The timing here is crucial because the certificate must be issued no more than 10 days before you arrive in Bulgaria. This is a tight window and means you can’t get it too early. Once issued, the certificate is valid for 10 days to enter the EU. After you’re in, it stays valid for 6 months for traveling around Europe and for coming back to the UK.

When you arrive in Bulgaria, you’ll need to go through a designated travelers’ point of entry where border officials might check your pet’s paperwork and scan the microchip to make sure everything matches up.

You can bring up to 5 pets when traveling by air for non commercial purposes. One thing Bulgaria doesn’t require is tapeworm treatment, which some other destinations demand. Only Finland, Ireland, Malta and Northern Ireland ask for that treatment.

Flying To Bulgaria With Your Pet

Sofia Airport handles most international pet arrivals. Depending on where you’re going in Bulgaria, we can also arrange flights to Varna and Burgas on the Black Sea coast.

Your pet travels in a crate we build in our workshops. We measure it specifically for your dog or cat so they can stand up, turn around and lie down comfortably. The flight from the UK to Bulgaria takes around 3 to 4 hours depending on which route and connections work best.

Living In Bulgaria With Pets

Bulgaria gives you a good mix of city life and outdoor access. Sofia sits at the base of Vitosha Mountain, so you get parks and hiking trails right on your doorstep. If you’re heading to the coast, Varna and Burgas have beaches and waterfront areas that locals and expats both enjoy.

Major cities like Sofia, Varna and Plovdiv have vet practices and pet shops. Costs tend to run lower than in the UK, which helps if you’re planning a long stay. The country has hot summers and cold winters, although the coastal areas stay milder year round. Worth thinking about how your pet copes with temperature swings if you’re relocating permanently.

Planning Your Trip

You’ll want to start organizing things at least 3 to 4 weeks before you plan to travel. The tricky bit is timing the Animal Health Certificate correctly since it must be issued within 10 days of entering Bulgaria. Get it too early and it expires before you arrive.

Most vet practices have an Official Veterinarian on staff who can issue the certificate. Fees vary between practices, so check with your regular vet about their charges before you book travel. Some charge considerably more than others.

The Animal Health Certificate replaced the Pet Passport system completely for UK residents. Even if you somehow got an EU Pet Passport before April 2026, it won’t work for entering Bulgaria anymore. The EU closed that loophole.

How Much Does It Cost

Cost depends on your pet’s size and which Bulgarian airport makes sense for your final destination.

FAQs

Can I still use a UK Pet Passport for Bulgaria?

No, UK Pet Passports stopped working for EU travel after Brexit. You need an Animal Health Certificate issued by a UK Official Veterinarian within 10 days before you enter Bulgaria.

What changed in April 2026 for pet travel to Bulgaria?

The EU tightened the rules around who can use EU Pet Passports. Now they can only be issued to people whose main home is in the EU. This closed a loophole where UK residents with EU holiday homes sometimes got EU Pet Passports. All UK residents now need Animal Health Certificates for EU travel.

How long does the Animal Health Certificate last?

The certificate is valid for 10 days to enter Bulgaria. Once you’re in the EU, it stays valid for 6 months for traveling around and for returning to the UK, as long as your pet’s rabies vaccination doesn’t expire.

Does Bulgaria require tapeworm treatment for dogs?

No. Only Finland, Ireland, Malta and Northern Ireland require tapeworm treatment.
